In this course, Beryl Armstrong (M.S., LCPC, NCC) (1) explains NSSI as self-harm without suicidal intent; (2) outlines the types of NSSI and why adolescents do it; and (3) notes what the family risk and protective factors are for it. After providing theoretical rationales for the use of DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) and AFBT (attachment-based family therapy) with NSSI clients, Armstrong delineates the session content for an AFBT approach. A case study ensues, followed by explanation of the chief categories of DBT skills that need to be taught for any DBT-informed approach.
